Introduction to social anxiety books
Books are a great resource for overcoming social anxiety. One of the natural perks is that they are easily accessible, meaning you can pick one up today and work on overcoming social anxiety from the comfort of your own home. But how do you know which book to choose? A search for the term “social anxiety book” on Amazon gives you over 7000 hits, and we can assure you – they are not all good books that will help you overcome social anxiety.
What makes a great social anxiety book?
In our opinion, there are a few factors that make a book good for overcoming social anxiety. First of all – it can not be too difficult to read. No complex language or overcomplicated models. After all, the most important thing is that the book is helpful for average people, not only for psychology professors. Secondly, it needs to be relatable! You, the reader, should recognize yourself in the problem descriptions and the examples. If you can relate to the problems, you can also hopefully relate to the solutions, which will make them easier to implement in your life.
Something we believe to be very effective in self-help books for social anxiety is workbooks. For example when the author makes you reflect on your own social anxiety by mixing theoretical information with fillable exercises.
How to choose a great book for you
First of all, you need to know yourself and your needs. Why do you want to get a social anxiety book? To learn more about the disorder in general? Or to get hands-on tips on how you can feel better?
Another important question to ask yourself is – do you actually suffer from social anxiety disorder? Maybe what you feel is shyness and not social anxiety. Then you should look for other types of books. A good starting point is our social anxiety test.
When you know what your objective is you should start thinking about what type of book you want. Do you want one that packs all the information you can possibly need, at the risk of being “wordy”? Or do you prefer something lighter that will give you an overview so that you later can choose to deep dive into the different aspects of social anxiety?
We found that books that touch on the topic of social anxiety, without offering any concrete tips are often named slightly more vague. Whereas books that are very straightforward often say so in their title. “The Solution to Social Anxiety” or “The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook: Proven, Step-by-Step Techniques for Overcoming Your Fear” for example.
Is the author appreciated?
Another tip for choosing the right social anxiety book is to look at what else the author has written, and what the responses have been. Someone who has written several books on the same topic is probably somewhat of an authority figure on that specific topic.
An author with several other books on social anxiety (and related topics) that has generated good reviews consistently is always a good bet.
