Gillian Butler is one of the authorities on CBT-therapy for social anxiety! Not only is she a founding member of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, but she also helped develop the cognitive-behavioral model for treating social anxiety at the University of Oxford. In this book, she teaches us what social anxiety is and how CBT is used to overcome it.

Why do we recommend this book?
This book is very well elaborated and covers some key concepts. Both about social anxiety in general and about what cognitive behavioral therapy is and how it’s used. As a result, the book is a little bit more theoretical and less hands-on than for example The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook that is number one on our list of great social anxiety books. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not suitable for treating your social anxiety! If this is the only book you read on the topic, you will learn a lot and still get enough helpful tips and tricks to start improving your situation.
With the book, you will also get some helpful material for working on your social anxiety at home. In the books appendix, you’ll find handy thought records for catching and analyzing your thoughts.

This book is a great start if you want to overcome social phobia. You will learn everything you need to know about the disorder, as well as how you can use CBT-techniques to change your thinking overcome your fears.
You can use the book on your own to learn more about social anxiety, but also as a foundation for discussions with a CBT-therapist. Similarly, you can use the exercises at the end of the book by yourself, or guided by a therapist.
