How does this book help me overcome social anxiety?

We believe that Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness: A Self-Help Guide Using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques is one of the most comprehensive books on the market about social anxiety disorder in general. But more specifically, one of the most comprehensive books about cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and about how you can use it to overcome SAD.

The book will teach you that CBT-therapy is suitable for overcoming social anxiety for two reasons. First of all, CBT has been subjected to the strictest scientific testing and proven to be effective as a treatment method. And secondly, because studies suggest that people who have treated their social anxiety with CBT-therapy are less likely to experience a later recurrence of their symptoms. In conclusion, CBT can give you lasting relief from your anxiety.

CBT-therapy deals with the negative thinking patterns that have been linked to both social anxiety, and other disorders. For example compulsive gambling and alcohol or drug addiction. In other words, a CBT approach can help people with a number of things, including overcoming social anxiety.

The book consists of three parts. The first one is very educational and will focus on what social anxiety is, where it comes from and what causes it. In addition to that information, the book will focus more on you in the second part. This is where you will get some useful tips and techniques to change your thinking and build up your confidence. Lastly, you will get some tips on how to be more assertive and relaxed in social situations in the last part of the book.

The books content

Part 1

  • What is social anxiety

Why do we recommend this book?

This book is very well elaborated and covers some key concepts. Both about social anxiety in general and about what cognitive behavioral therapy is and how it’s used. As a result, the book is a little bit more theoretical and less hands-on than for example The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook that is number one on our list of great social anxiety books. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not suitable for treating your social anxiety! If this is the only book you read on the topic, you will learn a lot and still get enough helpful tips and tricks to start improving your situation.

With the book, you will also get some helpful material for working on your social anxiety at home. In the books appendix, you’ll find handy thought records for catching and analyzing your thoughts.

Another neat thing about this book is the price! You can find copies of Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness: A Self-Help Guide Using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques as little as $4 on amazon!

What do others say about it?

The book has scored 4,2 / 5 from 70 reviews on Amazon and most people seem to agree with us that it is a great choice! The only negative criticism seems to be regarding the fact that the book is a little bit “wordy”, and contains fewer models and examples than in some other books on social anxiety. But in our opinion, that only means you will get a book packed with great information!

Here are some of the reviews:

“Great book – easy to read and well laid out. Great for someone like me with little previous knowledge as it really teaches you the basics initially and then guides you through the process of overcoming the difficuties.”

Julien

“This is very good and helpful I would definitely recommend it, it provides information about what you can do to overcome social anxiety”

Danielle

“I have read a lot of self-help books and I would rate this one as easy to understand, not too weighty and technical and full of ways and means to help yourself to get out of the negative thinking rut that allows the social anxiety to perpetuate.”

Emily

Concussions
